The eyes are the windows to the soul, and they can also reflect a person's health.
Many tumours also emit signals through the eyes. If there is a rapid loss of vision, yellowing of the white part of the eyes, protrusion of the eyeballs and loss of visual field, early medical attention is needed.
What are the symptoms of a tumour in the eyes?
01 Protrusion of the eye
Most protruding eyes are associated with hyperthyroidism. Excluding this, one should be on the alert for cranio-orbital communicating tumours and intra-orbital masses, which are characterised by protruding eyes with little to no effect on vision or eye movement. Protrusion of the eyeball is also commonly associated with haemangiomas, smooth muscle tumours and lacrimal gland masses, and may be retinoblastoma and meningioma, or optic nerve sheath tumours.
02 Loss of vision
There are two types of vision loss, one is acute, a significant loss of vision in a short period of time. This is caused by a tumour that grows rapidly over a short period of time, thus compressing the optic nerve, optic tract and optic cross.
In addition, brain tumours in children can also cause a dramatic loss of vision and visual field loss, as well as severe headaches, projectile vomiting and seizures. If children have these symptoms, they should be alerted to neuroblastoma or retinoblastoma, which are malignant tumours and require comprehensive examination and treatment in a regular hospital.
03 Shifted vision
Double vision is commonly associated with cranio-orbital communicating tumours, paracavernous sinus tumours or intra-orbital masses.
04 White pupils
The white pupil in childhood, known medically as the cat's eye sign, is commonly seen in neuroblastoma and central nervous system tumours, but can also be due to intraorbital rhabdomyosarcoma and retinoblastoma, which cause changes to the eye and the tissue surrounding the eye. The most prevalent of these is retinoblastoma, which often occurs in children under 2 years of age.
05 Visual field defects
The area of the eye that can be seen by keeping the head and eyeballs stationary and looking ahead is known as the visual field. Visual field defects indicate a reduction in the field of vision and are often caused by malignant tumours of the pinna or optic nerve, or pituitary abscesses or pituitary tumours; deep malignant tumours of the temporal lobe, massive bleeding from pituitary tumours and meningiomas of the saddle nodes, as well as craniopharyngiomas.
06 Yellowing of the whites of the eyes
Yellowing of the whites of the eyes is the first sign of jaundice and is often due to hepatocellular lesions or biliary obstruction, but may also be due to haemolytic disease. The yellowing of the mucous membranes due to high levels of bilirubin in the blood, which leads to yellowing of the sclera, is common in liver or bile duct cancer, and possibly cancer of the head of the pancreas.
If you have any of these symptoms, you should not take any chances and go to the hospital for early examination to rule out ophthalmology and further MRI of the head to see if there are any tumourous lesions in the skull to facilitate early surgical removal.
If the whites of the eyes are yellow, you should choose the hepatobiliary and gastroenterology departments for relevant examinations and an ultrasound or CT examination of the abdomen to clarify the diagnosis and rule out the possibility of cancer.
In addition, you should use your eyes scientifically and correctly, reduce the time spent playing with electronic products and do more eye exercises to relieve eye strain.
